Snapchat Launches Specs Intelligence as a Standalone AI Assistant

Artificial intelligence is quickly moving beyond the traditional chatbot model. Instead of waiting for users to type a question and receive an answer, the next generation of AI assistants is being designed to understand context, remember priorities, and provide useful information before a user even asks for it.

Snap is now entering this space with SPECS Intelligence, a new AI service designed to work across iPhone, Mac, and Snap’s new SPECS augmented reality glasses.

Announced on September 16, 2026, SPECS Intelligence is being positioned as an “anticipatory AI service.” Rather than functioning only as a chatbot, the system is designed to understand a user’s goals, priorities, relationships, and routines through the apps and services they choose to connect.

The interesting part is that users do not need to own the SPECS AR glasses to use the service. Snap is making the experience available through iPhone and Mac as well, although availability is currently limited.

What Is SPECS Intelligence?

SPECS Intelligence is essentially Snap’s attempt to build a more personal type of AI assistant.

Traditional AI tools generally operate on a simple model: you ask a question, and the AI responds.

For example, you might ask:

“What meetings do I have tomorrow?”

Or:

“Help me plan my vacation.”

SPECS Intelligence is designed to take a different approach.

Instead of waiting for every instruction, it can use information from connected applications to understand what is happening in your life and identify situations where assistance could be useful.

Snap describes the service as something that can understand your goals, priorities, relationships, and routines from the apps and tools you choose to connect. That information can then be carried across supported devices.

This is why Snap calls it an “anticipatory” AI service.

The idea is simple:

AI shouldn’t always wait for you. Sometimes it should be ready before you ask.

How Does the AI Actually Help?

Imagine you have an important meeting tomorrow morning.

A traditional chatbot might help you prepare only after you ask it:

“Prepare me for my meeting.”

SPECS Intelligence is designed to go further.

It could potentially identify the upcoming meeting, understand relevant information from your connected services, and surface useful preparation such as decisions that need to be made, questions you might want to ask, or important details to remember.
